Working with Believe since July 2020, Abegail – or Begs for her friends and coworkers – operates as a Video Channel Manager for The Philippines, her own country, and also for Australia and New Zealand. And if you're not familiar with the work of a Video Channel Manager, Begs will teach you the ropes and even give you some valuable tips for your next video.

Hi Begs, can you tell us what are the tasks of a Video Channel Manager?

A Channel Manager is responsible for ensuring the imported videos – or ingested as we say - are in line with the platforms policy, that rights have been cleared and video metadata has been optimized. We're also responsible for helping our artists and producers strategize their video releases to get the maximum viewership, subscribers, and revenue.

What got you primarily hooked on this work?

It would be working for music artists! I have always been a fan of music. I love watching live bands and concerts, so being able to work with musicians and help them to maximize their video content is just a dream.

What are the recommended skills to be a Channel Manager?

You have to know how to communicate with different kinds of people and know how to relay your message across in a way that everyoe will understand. As the industry changes everyday, you must be updated with the current events and you should know how to incorporate those updates to help the producers you work with succeed. You have to be a problem solver and be strategic. And lastly, you have to learn how to manage your time: in a day, there are a lot of things you will be responsible for, so you should be able to balance work and personal life or else, you will go crazy!

Is there a difference between managing labels and not only artists?

The only difference is the number of contents. Obviously, a label will have more contents rather than just a single artist. So, in my opinion, helping a label plan their releases is more challenging helping only an artist. We need to ensure that all videos releases are well thought out and do not overlap with each other. But in terms of individual optimization, it is just the same thing.

You can’t just shoot a video without clear content and goals. Start with your end goal, then work backwards and think of what you want to achieve with the video. Is it for awareness? New subscribers? More ads to be placed? Also make sure to use headlines and titles to emphasize the key points of your video. Check your analytics to see what metadata has been working well for your content. If this is your first video, check what is trending and do a research

Do you have golden rules to share with us for anyone aiming to create effective video content?

You must have a plan! If this is your first video, check what is trending and do a research. It will all be difficult and a lot of work in the beginning, but when you get used to how it's done, and once you see the impact of these strategies on your channel, you'd be truly happy, and it will all be a walk in the park 😉

What would you say to someone who wants to work in the music industry?

You must have passion. In this industry, you will be working with a lot of people with different personalities. It can be really tough to work with very talented people at times, but when you have passion for what you do, and you care and believe in their talent, you will also find the patience and the right mindset to get to your goal.
